Protect your facility against canine influenza

Canine influenza is a relatively new disease, but several key factors suggest this highly contagious disease will continue to spread:

  • Most dogs have no natural immunity to the virus, so virtually every dog exposed to it for the first time will become infected
  • The virus is transmitted by direct contact (nuzzling or sniffing); through the air (coughing or sneezing); or via contaminated surfaces (the hands or clothing of an employee or pet owner)
  • Canine influenza is often misdiagnosed as canine cough or another respiratory disease because its clinical signs are similar
For all these reasons, the threat of an outbreak is highest within multiple-dog settings such as kennels, shelters, or other pet care facilities.

Outbreaks of canine influenza at kennels and boarding facilities have resulted in temporary closures and costly aftermaths of disinfections, lost business, and damaged reputations.

The good news is that, working together, we can reduce the opportunity for canine influenza to cause an outbreak at your facility or within your community. Vaccination with Nobivac® Canine Flu H3N8 has been shown to decrease the likelihood of an influenza outbreak.33

By recommending or requiring flu vaccination for all incoming dogs, you can help protect your facility and the dogs in your community. It's important to remember that your customers will need to plan ahead if you require vaccination before boarding, because their dogs will need to receive 2 doses given 2 to 4 weeks apart to be fully protected.

To assist you in spreading the word about the benefits of vaccination, we've put together a kit of educational materials that you can download, customize, and send to area pet owners, clinics, shelters, and other pet care facilities. Access these materials here.
